The Philadelphia Eagles will likely be without quarterback Jalen Hurts for the rest of the season due to a blood clot in his lungs. The Eagles had known about the clot before their Week 5 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the NFL London Game, but cleared him to play. That wasn't the only thing Hurts had to deal with, though.
In a post on X, formerly Twitter, ESPN's Ian Rapoport shared that Hurts had been in the hospital until 4 am before the Jags game and had not slept due to “risk.”
Tom Pelissero of The Ringer and Netflix added more detail, saying that doctors told Hurts not to sleep as a precaution. That meant Hurts had been awake for a around 36 hours or day and a half straight, yet played anyway.
A sleep-deprived Hurts went 21-of-40 for 220 yards and a touchdown as the Eagles went down to the Jaguars, 19-17. Hurts then missed Sunday's game against the Carolina Panthers, which the Eagles lost 25-14. Tanner McKee started in Hurts' place, going 26-of-45 with 215 yards and a score.
Article Continues BelowThere are serious questions that need to be raised about the Eagles' front office and medical staff for allowing Hurts to play in London given the circumstances. Playing football at a severely sleep-deprived state, with a blood clot in the lungs no less, had to have been a big risk to Hurts' health and safety.
Regardless, Hurts is likely done for the year, and without him, so are the Eagles. His focus now must be to get fully healthy and recovered amid his current condition.
