Texas Tech running back Cameron Dickey suffered a high ankle sprain in Saturday night’s 29-7 win over the Colorado Buffaloes, and while he is expected to miss time, it's not a season-ending injury, On3's Pete Nakos reported on Monday.

Dickey was injured after his ankle bent awkwardly beneath a defender. He left the game after just four carries for 15 yards. After the game, head coach Joey McGuire said Dickey underwent X-rays which came back negative.

Still, the timetable for Dickey's return remains unclear. The upcoming bye week gives him additional time to recover, although he would be questionable at best for Texas Tech's game against Arizona State in two weeks, according to Nakos.

Dickey has been an essential part of the Red Raiders' offense this season. Through five games, he has rushed 57 times for 242 yards, averaging 4.2 yards per carry, while his four rushing touchdowns lead the team. He has also recorded five receptions for 45 yards.

Texas Tech felt his absence against Colorado, particularly in short-yardage situations. The Red Raiders attempted to use the wildcat formation three times in the first half without Dickey, but the Buffaloes stopped each attempt.

McGuire acknowledged backups J'Koby Williams and Quinten Joyner had not practiced that play as much as Dickey, leading the team to abandon it after halftime. He said the wildcat remains part of the offense and indicated tight end Terrance Carter could handle the role if Dickey remains unavailable.

Joyner picked up the slack after Dickey's departure, finishing with 63 yards on 10 carries, including a 30-yard touchdown run. He has 152 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 35 attempts this season after missing all of last year with a knee injury.
