No. 1 Texas showed its weaknesses against Oklahoma on Saturday in the Red River Rivalry, falling 27-24 in a stunning upset. Special teams blunders and costly turnovers proved to be the difference, as quarterback Arch Manning threw two interceptions in the fourth quarter that played a major role in the loss.
The 22-year-old completed 19 of 31 passes for 260 yards and three touchdowns. However, his costly mistakes overshadowed his production as the Sooners capitalized on the Longhorns' errors to ultimately secure the win.
“I think we got to do a better job, especially me not being loose with the ball,” Manning said after the game. “I think we beat ourselves a lot tonight.”
Texas paid a heavy price for the quarterback's first interception. Oklahoma safety Peyton Bowen returned the pick 42 yards for a touchdown, putting the Sooners ahead 24-17. Manning's second interception came during the Longhorns' attempt to move into position for a potential late field goal. Instead, the turnover allowed Oklahoma to advance into range for the game-winning kick.
Special teams mistakes added to Texas' woes, with the Sooners turning a first-quarter blocked punt into a touchdown. The mistake came when a Longhorns player failed to stop an Oklahoma defender from breaking through, resulting in another costly score for Texas.
Despite the turnovers, the Longhorns still generated more offense than their rival. Texas accumulated 382 total yards, compared with Sooners 238, while Oklahoma managed only one offensive touchdown. Defensive penalties, including a pass interference call against Kade Phillips in the end zone, helped the Sooners's offense reach the end zone on its lone touchdown drive.

However, the Longhorns' offensive woes have become increasingly difficult to overlook. Before facing Oklahoma, Texas had failed to impress in its victories over UTSA and Tennessee, scoring 30 and 20 points, respectively.
The Longhorns also failed to score more than 24 points in any of its three games against Power Four opponents this season: Ohio State, Tennessee and the Sooners. Texas entered Saturday averaging 378.5 total yards per game, ranking 82nd among 138 FBS teams.
After rallying to defeat the Buckeyes 24-23 and reaching the top of the national rankings, the Longhorns have now suffered their first defeat of the season. Texas will look to rebound when it hosts Florida next Saturday, with kickoff scheduled for noon ET.
