As the Tennessee football team suffered a miserable loss to the Texas Longhorns on Saturday, 20-17, the team would get its first loss of the season in the conference opener. While the Tennessee football program's comeback fell short after a miraculous onside kick recovery, head coach Josh Heupel would give his honest assessment of the team's deficiencies.
One of the shining young stars in college football has been freshman quarterback Faizon Brandon, but he struggled against the Longhorns, throwing for 145 yards and a touchdown, even sustaining a shoulder injury before returning to the outing.
On top of just 70 yards on the ground, Heupel would credit the Volunteers for playing hard to the very end, but highlighted areas that were “not good enough,” like the quarterback.

Love the effort, how we play defensively, a lot of our special teams,” Heupel said, via 247 Sports. “Offensively, just not anywhere close to being good enough to beat a team like this. Everybody will have a hand in it when we go back on Monday with the tape with the guys, but up front, not good enough. Quarterback, not good enough. Everybody’s got a hand in it, and ultimately we’ve got to be better.”
“I do love how the team continued to fight, play. Played to the last play,” Heupel continued. “We didn’t play smart enough, but I’ll take the effort of playing the next play and continuing to fight until the clock ticks zero.”
At any rate, Brandon and the Tennessee football team look to improve next Saturday when the program takes on Auburn,
