The Ottawa Senators have opened training camp ahead of the 2026-27 season. The team has a lot of questions heading into the season, including how the Senators will replace Brady Tkachuk.

While the Senators prepare to address some roster changes, they have added another player on the blueline on a professional tryout contract, per an update from the team.

“ROSTER UPDATE: Defenseman Ben Hutton will participate in the training camp on a professional tryout contract (PTO),” the post on X, formerly Twitter, read.

Hutton was the 147th overall selection of the 2012 NHL Draft by the Vancouver Canucks. He would break into the NHL with the Canucks in 2015-16, playing in 75 games, with a goal and 24 assists. Since then, he has played for the Los Angeles Kings, Anaheim Ducks, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Vegas Golden Knights.

Hutton has spent the last five seasons with the Golden Knights, but has been more of a rotational player. He played 55 games with the team in 2025-26, scoring six goals and adding nine assists. He also won a Stanley Cup with the team in 2023. Still, Hutton has not reached the same heights he did in his rookie season. He played a career high of 75 games while also having a career high in assists and points that season.

While Hutton may not make a massive impact, the Senators struggled with injuries on the blue line last year. Overall, 13 different blueliners dressed for the team in 2025-26, and only three of them played 70 or more games.

The Senators will open the season on October 3 on the road against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
