The Colorado Rockies are coming off another horrible season. They finished the year at 58-104, sitting in last place in the NL West and 42 games out in the division race. It was a fourth straight season of losing 100-plus games. This has led the Rockies to already make a move on their coaching staff.
The Rockies have let go of Alon Leichman, the team's pitching coach. Now, the team has a replacement, per Bob Nightengale of USA Today.
“Pitching coach Ethan Katz doesn't stay out of work long: He's the Colorado Rockies' new pitching coach after previously being with the Chicago White Sox as their pitching coach and the Astros as an assistant pitching coach. He pitched 4 years in the Rockies' minor league system,” Nightengale posted on X, formerly Twitter.
The Rockies finish last in the majors in team ERA, with a 5.59 ERA. They were last in quality starts, 28th in opponent home runs, and last in opponent batting average.
Article Continues BelowKatz began scoring in 2009, when he was the pitching coach for Harvard-Westlake High School. He coached future Major Leaguers such as Max Fried, Lucas Giolito, and Jack Flaherty. He would get his first chance in the majors with the Los Angeles Angels rookie-level team in 2013. Since then, he has worked with the San Francisco Giants, Chicago White Sox, and Houston Astros.
The hope is that the change in pitching staff could help the fortunes of the Rockies. They have been in last place in the division for five straight years and have not made the playoffs since 2018.
