The Houston Astros’ managerial search has sparked speculation about Albert Pujols, whose connection to new general manager Randy Flores adds intrigue to the opening.
Flores’ arrival gives Houston a new decision-maker as it searches for a manager following Joe Espada’s departure.
Foul Territory posted a clip Monday on X, formerly Twitter, in which former All-Star catcher AJ Pierzynski discussed Pujols’ managerial aspirations and recalled their conversation during the World Series.
“Listen, I saw Albert Pujols at the World Series. I asked him, ‘You’re going to get a job,’ and he just kind of like, ‘I don’t know.’ He’s like, ‘I would love to have the opportunity, but I don’t know.’ So maybe this is his opening to get Randy Flores to hire him as the GM.”

Pierzynski’s comments presented Pujols as a possible managerial fit, not a confirmed candidate or interviewee. Flores is Houston’s new general manager, and the opening under discussion is for the manager’s job.
The St. Louis Cardinals connection explains the speculation. Flores played alongside Pujols and Yadier Molina with the Cardinals before spending 11 seasons in the organization’s front office. He joined as scouting director in 2015 and served as assistant general manager from 2019 through 2026.

The Astros announced on October 14 that they would not renew Espada’s contract. They hired Flores last Friday, leaving the managerial search as an immediate priority for the new executive and owner Jim Crane.
For now, Pierzynski’s account offers insight into Pujols’ interest in an opportunity, rather than evidence the Astros have approached him about the vacancy.
