The No. 3 Notre Dame Fighting Irish earned a 37-26 Week 5 win over the North Carolina Tar Heels in a surprisingly close contest. However, late in the matchup, Leonard Moore suffered an apparent upper-body injury and has been under evaluation ever since. On Sunday, head coach Marcus Freeman shared a tidbit of information on the situation.

Although Freeman didn't have an official update on the junior cornerback, it sounds like Moore might be a long shot to play in the Week 6 matchup against the Stanford Cardinal, according to Pete Sampson of The Athletic. While the injury is currently undisclosed, it appears Moore will need some time to recover.

“Freeman said he didn’t have an update on the All-American cornerback postgame, but it wouldn't be a shock if he were held out against Stanford next week,” Sampson wrote.

The injury occurred late in the contest against the Tar Heels when Leonard Moore collided with North Carolina tight end Jelani Thurman. His head came in contact with Thurman's shoulder and was attended to by trainers almost immediately. Moore got up and walked off the field under his own power and did not return to the game.

If he is to miss time, Notre Dame would likely rely on sophomore Mark Zackery IV to step into the starting role. The good news is that Stanford is not the most competitive program this year, so the Fighting Irish can probably afford not to play with Moore on the field.

Leonard Moore has been a starter in Marcus Freeman's program since 2024 as a true freshman. He has 31 games under his belt and has been a solid contributor in the secondary. Through five games played so far this season, Moore has recorded eight tackles and four pass deflections.
