The 2026 World Series hasn't even ended but rumors are already swirling about the MLB futures of some of the stars on the Tampa Bay Rays roster. Chelsea Janes of SNY recently revealed potential starting pitching fits for the New York Mets, and mentioned Drew Rasmussen and Nick Martinez as guys who could make sense. Janes admitted to not knowing how the Mets feel about either pitcher, so this seems more like speculation. Of course, Rasmussen has a club option and Martinez has a mutual option on their contracts for 2027.
The Rays avoided getting swept on Tuesday in the World Series by earning a 4-3 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers. Milwaukee now holds a 3-1 series lead.
Rasmussen and Martinez are obviously focused on the Fall Classic at the moment. They will worry about contract stuff after the World Series — which they hope doesn't end until after Game 7 on Saturday.
Article Continues BelowThe Mets' focus is on the offseason, though. New York failed to meet expectations during the regular season and ultimately missed the postseason. The Mets could use some help in the starting rotation. They are expected to at least be in the conversation to sign Tarik Skubal since team owner Steve Cohen is never shy about spending big money.
Rasmussen and Martinez are All-Stars who could certainly catch their attention. It remains to be seen if either pitcher will even enter free agency, though. The Rays may not be able to extend either pitcher, so Rasmussen and/or Martinez could emerge as trade candidates even if they don't enter free agency.
