Miami football released a statement Wednesday after star wide receiver Malachi Toney suffered an injury at practice ahead of Saturday’s matchup at Notre Dame.
The sophomore has recorded 73 receptions for 1,027 yards and 13 touchdowns this season, leading Power 4 receivers in catches. His production has helped the Hurricanes reach 8-0 and claim the No. 1 spot in the College Football Playoff rankings.
Miami faces a 7-1 Notre Dame team ranked No. 11 in the CFP standings, with Toney’s availability drawing attention ahead of the road game.
NBC Sports's Nicole Auerbach shared Miami Athletics’ statement Wednesday on X, formerly Twitter, following the initial injury reports.
“Malachi Toney sustained an injury during Wednesday’s practice and is currently undergoing further evaluation by the team’s medical staff. We will share additional updates as appropriate.”
Toney accounts for 35.1% of the Hurricanes’ receptions, 38.6% of their receiving yards and 46.4% of their touchdown catches, underscoring his importance to quarterback Darian Mensah’s offense.

Toney made his college debut against Notre Dame last year, recording six catches for 82 yards and a touchdown in Miami’s 27-24 victory. That result helped the Hurricanes secure the final at-large CFP berth while leaving the Irish outside the field.
Saturday’s rematch kicks off at 7:30 p.m. ET at Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend. The Hurricanes have not announced whether their standout receiver will be available as they pursue a ninth straight victory and look to strengthen their College Football Playoff position.
