NC State decided to move on from Dave Doeren, who had been the coach of the school from 2013 through this season. Now, the Wolfpack needs a new coach. NC State has interviewed former quarterback Russell Wilson for the open position.

Now, it seems that Wilson will not be getting the job, as Phillip Rivers could be the new head coach for the team, according to Nick Kosko of On3.

“NC State is set to meet with Philip Rivers in Fairhope, Alabama regarding their head coaching vacancy, per On3’s Pete Nakos,” Kosko wrote. “Multiple sources have told On3’s Chris Low and Nakos in recent days that Rivers has begun making preliminary phone calls to build out a coaching staff and front office. Rivers has not signed a contract yet and a timetable remains unclear for his hiring, but he remains the focus and target of the NC State coaching search. Rivers’ son Gunner is also a Class of 2027 commit to the Wolfpack, so the family connection to the school remains.”

The former quarterback has also spoken out about the rumors of him taking the job at NC State.

“Shoot, NC State’s special to me,” Rivers said. “Coach Doeren, shoot, what he did over 14 years, all-time winningest coach. A ton of respect and appreciation for how he went about it with the university. There’s nothing there at this point. We understand the chatter that’s out there. Got to take it one day at a time. That’s all I know. I’m excited about this postseason with these guys here. You never say never. But there’s nothing imminent.”
