The San Francisco Giants struggled in 2026. They finished the season at 65-97, fourth in the NL West. The pitching was a major issue. They finished 23rd in the majors in team ERA. The Giants have already made one small move to the pitching staff, acquiring Tony Neubeck from the Washington Nationals.

Now it is being reported that the Giants could be eyeing a much bigger move for the pitching staff, according to Bob Nightengale speaking on Foul Territory.

Nightengale was asked about mystery teams that could be interested in Tarik Skubal in free agency.

“Would the San Francisco Giants be a mystery team? They got the money. That's possible, but I don't see a small-market, mid-market team jumping in. I know someone threw out the White Sox earlier. That was kind of laughed at. So no, I don't think we will have a mystery team. When you're talking about that kind of money, you are really talking about three or four teams that are going to be in this thing,” Nightengale said. “It's just two rich for a lot of teams' financial comfort.”

The Los Angeles Dodgers remain the favorite to sign Skubal, bringing him back after trading for him during the season. Meanwhile, other teams, such as the New York Mets, New York Yankees, and Philadelphia Phillies, also have the financial means to sign a player like Skubal.

Skubal could be looking for a $400 million contract, which will likely take many smaller market teams out of the running. He could also sign before the CBA expires on December 1.
