The Chicago Bulls are still figuring things out. They are in a rebuilding stage and still learning the ropes from head coach Tiago Splitter in his first year.
On Monday, the Bulls lost to the Boston Celtics, 134-99, at TD Garden. They are now 1-3 to start the season.
After the game, Matas Buzelis openly admitted that the team is still trying to figure out the offensive schemes laid out by Splitter, per Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times.
“We have Norm [Powell], Caleb [Wilson], both ultra-aggressive, so you’ve got to figure out the right time to shoot,” Buzelis said. “Not just me — all of us. That’s why we all watched film together [Sunday], players only, trying to figure out how things need to work.
“Once we figure out our spots, where we want to go, and then everyone figures out what they’re going to shoot, the shots they’re going to take, it will be easier to understand the game. Right now, how we’re shooting is like freestyle. We really don’t know what we have to get into or what sets we have to be aggressive in. But I know this group is very passionate about basketball and what we have to do to get there, how we can compete every night, [to] be the best team we can be.”
He also spoke about where he fits into the offense.
“What do people think — you’re going to come in and get buckets right away?” he said. “It’s a process. I’ve been working really hard, worked hard this summer, so all I need to really do is get out there and trust my skills. I’m still trying to figure out where I can hunt my shots at, where I can be aggressive. And once that happens, we’ll be just fine, all of us.”
Buzelis finished the game with 11 points. But he isn't the only one putting up numbers.
The Bulls got some scorers
Article Continues BelowAlthough the Bulls are still learning the ropes with a new coach and new management structure, they have a decent scoring product on the floor.
Obviously, Caleb Wilson is on a clinic. He is averaging 21.0 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. He is also leading all NBA rookies in points per game. Wilson scored 17 points and grabbed 5 rebounds against the Celtics.
On Monday, Norman Powell, brought in to score, finished with 20 points, including four 3-pointers.
In the first three games, Jalen Smith, filling in for the injured Nic Claxton in the paint, scored in double figures. He scored 15 points against the Raptors, 14 against the Bucks, and 14 against the Wizards.
