The Maryland football team finds themselves mired in a tough campaign. Maryland's head coach Mike Locksley is under fire, after struggling during his overall tenure in College Park. College football insider Pat Forde thinks that Maryland should be looking at another Big Ten school for Locksley's replacement.
“Maryland should probably try to pry one of the coordinators off Indiana’s staff. Both OC Mike Shanahan and DC Bryant Haines were on Cignetti’s staff from 2019 to ’23 at James Madison, where they dramatically outrecruited everyone in the DMV area when it came to identifying underrated prospects. When trying to lift up a losing program in the Big Ten, Cignetti stands as the beacon of hope and imitation,” Forde wrote for Sports Illustrated.
Maryland holds a 2-2 record on the season. The Terrapins are 0-1 in the Big Ten this year, after losing their conference opener to UCLA 54-3.
“If the Terrapins had fired Locksley last year, after a second straight 4–8 campaign, they might have been able to get into the mix to hire the guy from James Madison who emasculated Maryland on Saturday, Bob Chesney. Instead, Chesney is a phenom at UCLA and Maryland is trying to decide when (not if) it will send Locksley out the door,” Forde wrote.
Article Continues BelowIndiana is seen as a crown jewel in the Big Ten right now. That is because the Hoosiers haven't lost since the 2024 season. Indiana went undefeated in 2025, winning the national championship under Cignetti.
Time will tell what happens with Locksley at Maryland. The Terrapins have had him as their head coach since 2019. He also briefly served as interim coach in 2015. His last winning season was in 2023, when the team won eight games.
Maryland football next plays Nebraska on Saturday. The Terrapins have wins this season over UConn and Hampton.
