The Orlando Magic are dealing with an early injury concern at training camp after guard Anthony Black suffered a minor ankle sprain during the team's voluntary workouts leading into camp.
Magic head coach Sean Sweeney revealed Black's injury Wednesday as Orlando continued preparations for the 2026-27 NBA season. Orlando Sentinel reporter Jason Beede shared the update via X, formerly known as Twitter.
“#Magic coach Sean Sweeney said Anthony Black had a minor ankle sprain during the team’s voluntary workouts leading into training camp. Sweeney said Black is considered day-to-day and they’re just being smart about it.”
While Black's day-to-day designation suggests the injury is not considered serious, the Magic are taking a cautious approach with the fourth-year guard early in training camp.
Beede also shared a video from Wednesday's practice that showed Black participating in a limited capacity. Black stood under the basket and passed to teammates Jase Richardson, Jevon Carter and Jalen Suggs as they got shots up.

The setback comes at an important time for Black as he prepares for his fourth NBA season and continues to establish himself as a key piece of Orlando's backcourt. The former No. 6 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft is also eligible for a rookie-scale contract extension ahead of the regular season.
Black is coming off the best season of his young career. He averaged 15 points, 3.8 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.4 steals across 64 games during the 2025-26 campaign, including 40 starts. He shot 44.7% from the field and 33.3% from 3-point range while averaging 29.8 minutes per game.

Black isn't Orlando's only player being limited during the opening stages of training camp. Sweeney also revealed second-year forward Noah Penda is dealing with a hamstring issue.
“Also on the injury front: #Magic coach Sean Sweeney said Noah Penda tweaked his hamstring,” Beede reported.
Orlando has opened training camp with two practices per day, which has contributed to the team's cautious approach with both players.
“With two practices a day to start training camp, the team doesn’t want Penda and Black doing too much twice a day, Sweeney said,” Beede added.
Neither injury appears to have raised significant concern for the Magic at this stage. With the regular season still weeks away, Orlando can afford to limit Black and Penda while both work their way back to full participation.
