The Philadelphia Phillies suffered a scare when infielder Luis Arraez was pulled from the game against the Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday. On Friday, those fears were realized when Arraez was out of the starting lineup against the Tampa Bay Rays, per Bob Nightengale of USA Today.
As a result, Bryson Stott filled in as shortstop.
In the 6th inning, Arreaz sprained his ankle while trying to avoid a tag at first base. Ultimately, the Phillies lost to the Brewers 5-1. Arraez went 0-for-3 at the plate.
The X-rays were negative.
Altogether, Arraez is batting .310 with 185 hits, 6 home runs, and 64 RBIs. This season has been somewhat tough for him, given his battles with injuries.
In early April, Arraez had a minor hand ailment. Then in June, he was battling a minor foot injury that was evaluated on a day to day basis.
Meanwhile, Philadelphia is in a precarious position with three games left in the season. They still have a shot at a playoff spot in the 2026 NL Wild Card series. Even as the Chicago Cubs and San Diego Padres clinched a spot, the Phillies are setting their sights on the Rays this weekend.
If they win two games and the Arizona Diamondbacks lose two, Philadelphia will make the postseason. On the flip side, if the Diamondbacks sweep the Padres and the Phillies lose in a sweep, they will be eliminated.
Interim manager Don Mattingly said Arraez will be evaluated day to day for the remaining regular-season games.
The 2026 MLB postseason begins Tuesday, Sept. 29.
