The San Francisco 49ers have started the 2026 season on a hot streak. San Francisco is 3-0 headed into their Week 4 matchup against Denver. One 49ers coach will make team history this week that comes with a slight family connection.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan will make franchise history on Sunday against the Broncos.

“A new mark in San Francisco: Kyle Shanahan will pass Bill Walsh and coach in his 167th game today for the 49ers, the most in franchise history. Fittingly he will do it against the Denver Broncos, the team his father Mike coached. Kyle Shanahan has compiled a 94-72 record in San Francisco, and now he will have coached more games there than any coach in 49ers’ history.”

Shanahan passes Walsh, who coached 166 games for San Francisco over 10 seasons. This just so happens to be Shanahan's 10th season as 49ers head coach.

The veteran head coach still has several years to go to catch up to his father Mike, who spent two decades coaching in the NFL. Mike logged an impressive 170-138 coaching record in 20 seasons, including a 138-86 run with the Broncos. That stretch included back-to-back Super Bowls during the 1997-98 seasons.

Kyle has already led the 49ers to two Super Bowl appearances in 2019 and 2023. Unfortunately, they lost against Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs both times.

San Francisco has looked like a championship-caliber team early in the 2026 campaign. They face an important test against Denver on Sunday, a team that is finding its legs lately. Remember, the Broncos pulled off an impressive come from behind victory on Sunday Night Football in Week 3.

The 49ers sit alone atop the NFC West standings heading into Week 4. If they can pull off another big win, they'll extend their lead over the Seahawks and Rams.

49ers vs. Broncos kicks off at 4:25 p.m. ET from Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara.
