Ben Simmons’ performance has been anything but impressive over the past many months. His long absence from the court due to his health only added to his misery. However, he was determined to prove he could still contribute in the NBA after missing the entire 2025-26 season.

The former All-Star even confronted Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr during a preseason game after the organization passed on signing him. Simmons recalled the exchange during a recent interview with Andscape's Marc J. Spears.

“I said something to Steve. I said, ‘Y’all didn’t want me?’” Simmons recalled. “And [Kerr] said, ‘I didn’t know if you were healthy.’”

The Australian guard also challenged the reasoning behind Golden State's decision to pass on him.

“And I was like, ‘OK. That’s why you have people that do their job and go fly out and see.’ But it is what it is. That’s just me being competitive. It wasn’t personal,” Simmons added.

Simmons also revealed that he spoke with Stephen Curry after the exchange, telling the Warriors star, “I told you. I’m ready.”

Golden State was reportedly among the teams that showed interest in Simmons before he signed a $3.5 million guaranteed contract with the Sacramento Kings. The New York Knicks also explored the possibility of bringing him in on a training camp deal.

Simmons entered the season hoping to revive his NBA career after spending the previous campaign away from the league. He impressed Sacramento during a workout and appeared in preseason action before suffering a torn Achilles that ended his 2026-27 season before it began.

The former No. 1 overall pick had shown encouraging signs during his limited preseason appearances. He recorded 14 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists in 26 minutes against the San Antonio Spurs in Sacramento's exhibition finale.
