After rumors that New York's Knicks and Rangers were going to be split into separate companies by James Dolan, he pulled off the move.

The split was announced on Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2026 (via Mike Vorkunov). Dolan will remain the CEO of both companies, and he was awarded a $10 million one-time cash payout on Monday, Oct. 26, “in recognition of his significant efforts and leadership” in the move.

MSG Sports has become MSG Knickerbockers Corp. as a result of the move and will trade on the New York Stock Exchange as “MSGK.” Meanwhile, MSG Rangers Corp. trades under “MSGR.”

The move has been in the works for a while. It was first reported on in February 2026. MSG's board of directors approved a plan to “explore” the spin-off of the Knicks and the Rangers.

Dolan issued a statement to The New York Times. He explained that the move was being explored to”further create value for our shareholders.” There wasn't a timetable for the move to be completed at the time. However, it only took about eight months after his statement.

“We believe this proposed transaction would provide each company with enhanced strategic flexibility, its own defined business focus, and clear characteristics for investors,” Dolan elaborated.

It's unknown how the Knicks' recent success impacted the plan. They won their first championship in 53 years over the summer, beating the San Antonio Spurs in five games in the NBA Finals.

The Rangers are 7-6 thus far into the season. They are coming off a disappointing 6-3 loss to the Los Angeles Kings on Monday, Oct. 26.

The Knicks haven't been doing much better. They have started their championship repeat quest 0-3. The Knicks will have a chance to win their first game of the year against the Detroit Pistons on Tuesday, Oct. 27.
