The Utah Jazz have endured a difficult start to the 2026-27 NBA season, with their loss to the Memphis Grizzlies reducing them to a 1-3 record at the start of the campaign. However, the Grizzlies may have suffered a major setback in addition to the 110-105 loss at Delta Center, with both Jaren Jackson Jr. and Lauri Markkanen suffering injuries.
As it turns out, Jazz head coach Will Hardy, according to a lip reader, reportedly told the Grizzlies head coach, Tuomas Iisalo after the game that Jackson may have ‘torn something,’ per a post on X by Fullcourtpass.
“I think Jaren tore something, and I don't know about Lauri,” he reportedly said.

Both players are currently being evaluated, per ABC’s Dana Greene. Markkanen ended up injuring his wrist just six minutes into the game and did not return. Meanwhile, Jackson suffered a knee injury in the second quarter after Grizzlies guard Ty Jerome rolled into him after attempting a shot.
The Jazz therefore may have lost both of their best players in a single game, with Hardy explaining post-game that both players will be evaluated in detail.
“We’ll know more tomorrow once they get some imaging,” he said. “We’ll see how that goes tomorrow.”
