The Memphis Grizzlies have made another notable roster decision ahead of the 2026-27 NBA season. They just waived Jordan Hawkins one month after acquiring the former lottery pick from the New Orleans Pelicans. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Memphis and Hawkins mutually agreed to part ways.

Thgis allows the 24-year-old guard to explore the open market once he clears waivers. The Grizzlies acquired Hawkins on September 8 alongside Micah Peavy and future draft capital. They sent AJ Johnson and Taj Gibson to New Orleans. The move initially gave Memphis another perimeter scoring option. However, the Grizzlies’ evolving roster plans quickly changed the equation.

With head coach Tuomas Iisalo emphasizing the development of young pieces such as Jaylen Wells, Scotty Pippen Jr. and Cam Spencer, Hawkins faced stiff competition for backcourt minutes. His departure also further clarifies Memphis’ youth-focused direction following the offseason trade that sent Ja Morant to Portland.

Selected 14th overall by New Orleans in the 2023 NBA Draft out of UConn, Hawkins entered the league with a reputation as an elite movement shooter. Across three seasons with the Pelicans, he averaged 8.0 points and 2.3 rebounds over 174 regular-season appearances. He has flashed significant scoring upside when given extended opportunities.

However, defensive inconsistencies, uneven interior efficiency, and competition within New Orleans’ wing rotation limited his role. Hawkins now enters the market as a potential floor-spacing option for teams seeking perimeter scoring. For Memphis, the decision continues a roster reshaping centered on developing its younger core. This includes top-three pick Cameron Boozer and center Zach Edey, while creating additional clarity in the backcourt.
