The full scope of the moves the Giants made on Tuesday made their point clear. They could no longer justify giving a roster spot to veteran receiver Odell Beckham Jr.
Beckham is gone, and receivers Braxton Berrios and Charlie Jones have joined the 53-man roster. It’s simple; Berrios and Jones play special teams. Beckham doesn’t.
And it’s not a simple shuffling between the roster and the practice squad. Via Jordan Raanan of ESPN, the Giants aren’t expected to sign Beckham to the practice squad “at this time.”
The reunion with Beckham provided the Giants with a feel-good story, one the fans embraced. Reality has since settled in. With starting quarterback Jaxson Dart lost due to a knee injury, the Giants need to get the most out of every player on the team. Beckham wasn’t doing enough. It was time for him to go.
Whether he lands elsewhere remains to be seen. Other teams, like the Rams and 49ers, have needs. More injuries are inevitable.
Last year, Beckham didn’t play at all. It remains to be seen whether that will be the case for the balance of 2026.
