The New Orleans Pelicans made a good move in the offseason by signing Bennedict Mathurin, who was coming off a strong campaign with the Los Angeles Clippers, to a two-year, $16 million contract.
The Pelicans added a two-way weapon in Mathurin. He has steadily improved since arriving in the NBA as the No. 6 pick in 2022, although his shooting could use more work.
He will play a key role, likely as the sixth man, for New Orleans. The 24-year-old wingman said he cannot wait to begin his new chapter.
“It's great to be where a team really wants me. You know what I'm saying? It goes both ways. We have great teammates, we have a great coaching staff, a great front office, a great owner, and great people to do media with,” said Mathurin in a video posted by Fox 8 New Orleans' Madeline Adams.
“I'm thrilled. I'm very excited for the opportunity to get to play in less than three weeks.”

The Clippers did not re-sign Mathurin despite averaging 17.4 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.0 steals in 28 games last season. Los Angeles acquired him, along with Isaiah Jackson and draft capital, in a midseason trade with the Indiana Pacers in exchange for Ivica Zubac and Kobe Brown.
While he probably did not deliberately shade the Clippers and the Pacers, it is clear that Mathurin has a chip on his shoulder.
The Pelicans have a solid rotation with Mathurin, Zion Williamson, Trey Murphy III, Dejounte Murray, Saddiq Bey, Herbert Jones, and Derik Queen.
New Orleans will look to return to the playoffs after a two-year absence.
