Contract negotiations between the Detroit Pistons and star center Jalen Duren have reached a tense standstill, and NBA legend Carmelo Anthony is sounding the alarm. As Detroit hesitates to commit top dollar to its standout big man, Anthony warned the front office against jeopardizing the franchise's trajectory over financial hesitation.
Speaking on the situation, Anthony urged Detroit to pay the 22-year-old centerpiece without hesitation.
“Give him 5-years, $287M… Give this man his bread,” Anthony said. “Don't break this up over a couple of dollars.”

Anthony's passionate defense follows a breakout 2025–26 campaign where Duren established himself among the elite centers in the league. Duren earned his first NBA All-Star selection and an All-NBA Third Team nod after averaging 19.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game while shooting 65.0% from the field, according to ESPN stats.
However, contract talks hit an impasse after Duren turned down a five-year, $200 million extension offer. Detroit's front office hesitates after Duren experienced a playoff drop-off, averaging 10.2 points and 8.5 rebounds across 14 postseason contests. That caution peaked during Detroit's season-ending 125-94 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers, where Duren posted just seven points and nine rebounds in 26 minutes.
Still, Anthony believes focusing solely on postseason growing pains misses the bigger picture. Young All-NBA centers rarely hit the market, and nickel-and-diming a core anchor risks alienating a cornerstone alongside star guard Cade Cunningham. While Detroit must manage its long-term salary cap, Anthony thinks stinginess now could set the Pistons back significantly.
