Lionel Messi has played his final game for Argentina. Following a dominant victory over Benin, Messi penned an emotional note on Instagram, which received a touching response from his career rival, Cristiano Ronaldo.
Throughout their playing years, both Messi and Ronaldo have been considered two of the world's best soccer players and career rivals. Both men gave each other tough competition and prompted the other to do better.
“Yesterday was my last game and I already miss wearing the blue and white. I know I'm making the right decision. It was an incredible journey, full of joys and also some sadness, but I'm clear that every step I took was worth it.
“And I have many things left to say. It's impossible for me to express everything I feel in words or in a post. This journey would have been impossible without my family, who was always by my side and supported me, especially in difficult moments when I needed it the most,” Messi wrote on social media.
He further expressed his gratitude to all the soccer clubs he played for and how they allowed him to dedicate himself to his country. Messi also finished his note by expressing his gratitude to god, as well as his friends and family.
Shortly after, Ronaldo also commented on the post and paid his tribute. “Leo, so many years defending your country and a history that will last forever. All my respect for what you have achieved with Argentina. A hug.” (Quotes translated by Instagram)
