WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert addressed the media ahead of Game 1 of the 2026 WNBA Finals and gave an update on the search for the league's next commissioner, as she is set to step down after the season ends. According to a report by Kendra Andrews, Engelbert has been searching for her successor for years and has made moves to finalize the pick.
“Engelbert said she’s been working at finding her successor for three years now, but adds the league has hired Excel to spearhead the official search now. She has submitted suggested candidates, as has others. She says there is a lot of interest in the job,” Andrews posted on her X account.
In September, Engelbert announced her retirement at the end of the season.
“After more than seven years at the WNBA and more than 40 total years in business, I have made the decision to retire as WNBA Commissioner,” said Engelbert in a statement released by the WNBA. “In 2019, I had the privilege of being appointed the league’s first commissioner and to lead a league with enormous potential yet untapped awareness and significant undervaluation. Over the years, it has been amazing to watch WNBA players thrive and lead the massive cultural surge around women’s sports.”
