The Philadelphia Eagles have placed quarterback Jalen Hurts on injured reserve after further medical evaluations of a superficial blood clot, leaving the team without its starting quarterback indefinitely.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported the decision Saturday on X, formerly known as Twitter, following consultations with multiple medical specialists.

“Breaking: After consultations with numerous doctors and experts that went into Saturday, the Eagles are placing quarterback Jalen Hurts on injured reserve, sources tell @rapsheet and me. The move will sideline Hurts indefinitely.

More info to come.”

The decision comes just days after Philadelphia revealed that Hurts played through the condition during Sunday's 19-17 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in London.

According to the Eagles' medical statement released Wednesday, Hurts initially sought treatment for his calf Oct. 8 after reporting that he had been cleated during Philadelphia's Oct. 4 matchup against the Los Angeles Rams.

An ultrasound performed Saturday in London revealed a superficial blood clot. After reviewing the results, team doctors determined Hurts could safely participate in Sunday's game against Jacksonville.

“Jalen played without limitation in the game Sunday, received treatment on Monday and Tuesday, and practiced in full on Wednesday, as reflected in the practice report,” the Eagles said.

Eagles face uncertain quarterback situation without Jalen Hurts

However, a follow-up ultrasound Wednesday night revealed movement in the clot, prompting the organization to rule Hurts out of its Week 6 matchup against the Carolina Panthers.

“Jalen will be out for Sunday’s game vs. the Panthers as we determine the appropriate course of treatment. His health and safety are our highest priority.”

Earlier Saturday, Schefter reported that Philadelphia did not intend to place Hurts on injured reserve despite his uncertain recovery timeline. Additional consultations ultimately led the organization to reverse course.

The Eagles enter Week 6 with a 2-3 record following their narrow loss to Jacksonville. Hurts' absence creates another significant challenge for Philadelphia as it attempts to rebound from a disappointing start to the 2026 season.

Under NFL rules, placement on injured reserve requires Hurts to miss at least four games, although the team has not announced a timetable for his return.

Philadelphia will host the Panthers on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET on CBS, looking to remain competitive in the NFC East without its starting quarterback.
