The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will be facing the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 6, and there is a chance that Jalon Daniels will once again be the starting quarterback. At the same time, Baker Mayfield has been doing whatever he can to get back as soon as possible from his hand injury, and he's looking to take the next step in his recovery soon, according to Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times.
“Fully expect Baker Mayfield to test his ability to grip and throw the football today. Whether he can do that effectively is to be determined. Jalon Daniels is expected to start vs. Steelers unless Mayfield recovers more quickly than expected. Next game is at Carolina following the Steelers Sunday,” Stroud wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
Mayfield was always expected to be out for several weeks, but the competitor that he is, it would've been a surprise if he made it back earlier than his original timetable. If he's still having a hard time gripping the football today, he most likely will need another week or two before the Buccaneers truly feel like he can get back on the field.
Article Continues BelowDaniels has started for Mayfield in the past two games, and the Buccaneers are 1-1 in that stretch. He had his best game last week against the Dallas Cowboys, and he seems to be ready for whatever the team needs him to do.
The upcoming matchup against the Steelers won't be easy, especially with TJ Watt on the other side of the ball. Just like he did against the Cowboys, he'll have to maintain drives while also not turning the ball over. If he can do that, he can get the Buccaneers another win and also buy Mayfield some more time.
