NEW YORK -- In the span of two innings,  tied and broke a franchise record on Saturday with his 155th and 156th hits, passing Pete Alonso for most in a season by a Mets rookie.

Batting in the seventh inning, Benge dumped a broken-bat single into shallow right-center field to tie the record. An inning later, he hit a slow roller down the third-base line, where it died for an RBI infield single. As the Mets flashed his achievement on the Citi Field video board, Benge doffed his helmet to the crowd.

After hitting .136 over the first 20 games of his career, Benge has been one of the Mets’ most consistent offensive players, with a .294 average since that time. Saturday's 10-3 Mets win marked his 12th three-hit game of the season, including a homer off Phillies starter Andrew Painter in the second.

Unlike Alonso, whose debut season included a Major League rookie record 53 homers, Benge has collected a wide variety of hits: 19 homers, three triples, 19 doubles and 115 singles. He also has 22 stolen bases, which is two shy of the Mets’ rookie record that A.J. Ewing and Mookie Wilson share.

Despite his exploits, Benge is an underdog to win National League Rookie of the Year honors given Sal Stewart’s 32-homer, 110-RBI season in Cincinnati. But Benge should still receive votes for the award, along with Ewing and Nolan McLean.

The Mets’ first-round Draft pick in 2024, Benge debuted on Opening Day and has appeared in 149 of the team’s 155 games since that time.
