Aryna Sabalenka has been handed a fine after her outburst at the US Open final.
The United States Tennis Association (USTA) officially fined the 28-year-old $7,500 after she was given both a warning and code violation in the US Open final.
She would go on to lose with new world No. 1 Elena Rybakina triumphing 6-4 5-7 6-2.
Sabalenka's first outburst came during the first set when she hit a tennis ball into the crowd after being frustrated by her serve being broken.
This was when the umpire issued her the official warning for what is known as 'ball abuse.'
Despite this, she hit another ball in anger, only this time toward the back of the court, which was in the vicinity of an innocent camera operator.
Although she kept her emotions relatively in check for the remainder of the match, she lost all composure after Rybakina won match point.
After shaking her opponent's hand and congratulating her, upon returning to her area, Sabalenka's racket bore the brunt of her venting her frustrations as she smashed it repeatedly on the ground.
Furthermore, she also yelled at a nearby camera operator using explicit language prior to the start of the presentation ceremony.
Officially, the USTA fined Sabalenka for just one code violation, and it wasn't for ball abuse.
She was instead fined for racket abuse, which per the official regulations, is defined as smashing, throwing, or breaking a racket in anger while on the court.
Code violations are also awarded in tennis for audible instances of using expletives.
When put into perspective of the $2.8 million prize money, though, Sabalenka's fine is quite small.
Sabalenka criticised for her behavior
During her post-match interview, Sabalenka - who was trying to achieve a historic three-peat - tried to justify her on-court behavior.
âÂÂI wanted to let all of that aggression and disappointment go outside," Sabalenka said.
"ItâÂÂs really tough to control your emotions when you lose in the final of the Grand Slam and when you were trying toàgo for three-peat, so I just wanted to let it go.âÂÂ
Nine-time doubles Gran Slam winner Jonas Bjorkman was somewhat critical of Sabalenka, stating that she let herself down.
"I think she put so much pressure on herself that she wants badly to win, but it gets too much because you can't smash your racket and you can't go up towards your opponent who just beat you in a Grand Slam final and be that disappointed and then smash the racket even more," Bjorkman told talkSPORT.
"You have to show some respect to the champion; if you go into the locker room, you can smash all the eight or ten rackets you have in your bag.
"No one's going to see it, but you have to be a big loser, and I think also during everything [presentation] was getting ready, she goes down to her team, she sits there instead of waiting as you normally do for the presentation and everything.
"I think she's not been handling that perfectly."
