The San Diego Padres beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-1 on Wednesday. It was a solid win that put them atop the NL Wild Card Standings.

The victory enabled the Padres to surpass the Chicago Cubs and Philadelphia Phillies, per ESPN.

With the win, the Padres are 88-70, whereas the Cubs and Phillies are 87-71. Meanwhile, the Cubs lost their second consecutive game to the Miami Marlins 3-2. The Phillies also lost to the Milwaukee Brewers 4-1.

Lately, San Diego has been performing well. They have won 8 out of their last 10 games. Against the Dodgers, Manny Machado hit his 29th home run and drove in three runs. Additionally, Fernando Tatis Jr. went 3-for-5.

Overall, they have won 13 of their last 14 games. Meanwhile, the Cubs and Phillies have been struggling.

Both have split their last 10 games at 5-5. Earlier in the week, the Cubs blew a 12-inning game to the Marlins after giving up 6 runs in the top of the 12th. They were also 1-for-18 with runners in scoring position.

On Wednesday, the Phillies couldn't generate any action at the plate. Starting pitcher Aaron Nola gave up four runs, breaking an eight-game winning streak in which he gave up two runs or fewer.

Now, the Padres need only one game to clinch a playoff berth.

After an up-and-down first half, the Padres have come around at the right time. Their bullpen has been dominant lately, and their starting rotation has improved.

San Diego will finish their series against the Dodgers on Thursday. Then, they will close the season against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
