Arne Slot tipped to replace World Cup manager after tournament – but he has rival for job

Arne Slot could be in contention for the Netherlands job weeks after his departure from Liverpool.

Ronald Koeman has resigned as the Dutch manager following their disappointing campaign at the World Cup.

The Netherlands finished top of Group F but were beaten by Morocco on penalties in the last 32.

Koeman, formerly of Southampton, Everton and Barcelona, had been in the role since 2022, with this stint being his second in charge.

His departure means a vacancy has opened within the Dutch football set-up, with Slot becoming a speculated name for the role.

Liverpool dismissed the 47-year-old at the end of May having lost 20 matches across all competitions during the 2025/26 season.

However, whilst he may have his sights set on managing his country, Slot could face competition for the role.

When appearing on White and Jordan for talkSPORT last week, Dutch journalist Marcel van der Kraan explained: “There are only two candidates, at the moment, who are put forward.

“One is Peter Bosz of PSV Eindhoven. He waited to renew his contract until very late at the end of last season.

“So, the Dutch federation had the chance to appoint him. They let it go. Now, he’s renewed his contract and says he doesn’t want to do it anymore.

“The other one is Arne Slot himself. He’s been mentioned before, he’s free, and we can’t really see another candidate.

“And the Dutch don’t want to go to a German coach like you (England with Thomas Tuchel) do.”

Who is Peter Bosz?

A former midfielder for the Netherlands, Bosz has had various spells as a coach across European football.

Vitesse Arnhem were his first big club in his home country before he later joined the record 36-time league champions Ajax in 2016.

Ajax were Europa League runners-up during their one season with Bosz, who then moved to Borussia Dortmund.

German rivals Bayer Leverkusen were his next destination before a stint at Lyon in France, but it’s at PSV where Bosz has shone.

The 62-year-old has won the last three Eredivisie titles, the last of which saw PSV finish 19 points clear at the top.

As Van der Kraan mentioned, Bosz extended his contract at the club until mid-2028 earlier this year.
