Alek Manoah’s Angels fate sealed after just 3 appearances

The Los Angeles Angels have outrighted right-hander Alek Manoah to Triple-A Salt Lake after a series of roster moves that included clearing him through waivers, which opened a spot on the team’s 40-man roster, now reduced to 39. He had already been optioned to Triple-A on Sunday before the outright assignment was confirmed on Wednesday.

Manoah’s contractual and service-time situation remains a central part of his status. He has more than four years of big league service time but less than five, which means he can elect free agency, though he is not expected to do so. He signed a $1.95 million deal this offseason, with around $1.35 million still remaining to be paid.

Earlier in his career, Manoah recorded a 2.24 ERA across 31 starts in 2022 with the Toronto Blue Jays, finishing third in Cy Young Award voting. However, his performance declined sharply afterward, including a 5.87 ERA in 2023. Shoulder and elbow issues followed, leading to Tommy John surgery. He made five big league starts in 2024 and did not appear in the majors in 2025. He was later claimed by the Atlanta Braves after being placed on waivers but was non-tendered and returned to free agency before joining the Angels.

Manoah began the 2026 season on the injured list due to a middle finger contusion. After being activated earlier this month, he made three relief appearances, with his first two scoreless outings. In his most recent appearance against the Los Angeles Dodgers, he allowed 8 earned runs in 1.3 innings, while another line recorded him allowing 9 runs (8 earned) on 6 hits with 3 walks and 2 strikeouts in 1.1 innings.
