adidas reveal final Lionel Messi World Cup kit as Argentina, Scotland and others get retro Trefoil treatment
The countdown to the 2026 World Cup is well and truly on.
And the best way to mark the occasion is the kit releases.
The biggest and best nations will take to the pitches across North America this summer, with Argentina, Germany and Spain all gunning for glory in USA, Mexico and Canada for football’s showpiece.
While only one nation will get their hands on the World Cup, one notable difference will be in the kits.
adidas has brought the famous Trefoil back for the first time in 36 years with the release of the away kits.
The designs are inspired by the 90’s aesthetic, in which they last appeared, and will be worn by, among others, Lionel Messi, Lamine Yamal, Scott McTominay and Liverpool star Florian Wirtz.
Messi’s final World Cup?
Messi is expected to captain Argentina at his final World Cup as the Inter Miami star looks to inspire the nation to glory.
The Former Barcelona and PSG star played a key role for Argentina in Qatar in 2022 as La Albiceleste beat France on penalties four years ago.
Messi, 38, who had hoped to add the 2026 Finalissima to his trophy cabinet before the showdown with Spain was cancelled, is still yet to decide whether he will feature for Lionel Scaloni’s men this summer.
He has, though, been called up to the Argentina squad for their friendly match with Guatemala later this month, hinting at his involvement this summer.
Julian Alvarez has also made the cut, the striker netting against Tottenham in the Champions League in midweek, while the likes of Nico Paz and Enzo Fernandez have also been included.
Argentina are one of the pre-tournament favourites to go the distance later this year, but they face serious competition, both in their bid to lift the World Cup and their quest to win best away kit.
Spain’s year?
Spain boast one of the best squads heading to North America this summer, with head coach Luis de la Fuente able to call upon Yamal, Nico Williams, Fermin Lopez and Rodri, to name four.
The Euro 2024 winners are brimming with quality, evidenced by their international success in Germany two years ago.
Crucially, little has changed in terms of squad personnel, and it’s for that reason why many have Spain pegged as favourites to secure World Cup glory for the first time since 2010.
Other challengers?
Spain’s all-white away shirt may be a thing of beauty but La Roja and Argentina have serious competition on the kit front.
Scotland’s ‘Irn Bru’ inspired away kit is one fit for any international giant, with 2024 Serie A MVP McTominay among others set to look the part on the other side of the pond.
Germany is another contender for both the World Cup and the winner of the best kit award stateside.
Julian Nagelsmann is another manager who isn’t short of elite options this summer, with Wirtz, Serge Gnabry, Nick Woltemade and Leroy Sane all available to the former Bayern boss.
The last time Germany played out a major international tournament across the Atlantic, they returned with the World Cup in tow.
Can the 2026 edition repeat the feat 12 years later? They certainly can’t be discounted.
Colombia, Belgium, Wales, Italy, who’ll potentially compete for a spot at the World Cup in the playoffs later this month, and tournament co-hosts Mexico are among the other nations who’ll hope to sport a classy adidas away shirt at the World Cup this summer.
The quartet are unlikely to secure international glory this summer but they’ll look the part when they take to field in USA, Mexico or Canada this summer.
Other nations including Hungary, Ukraine, Costa Rica, Algeria, tournament debutants Curacao, Peru, Greece, Saudi Arabia and Venezuela have also been given the Trefoil treatment from adidas in what will be the biggest World Cup in history.
