Aaron Rai just did something Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy never have at PGA Championship

Aaron Rai is now a major champion after winning the PGA Championship. It took a dominant Sunday to seal the victory, as Rai shot a 65 in the final round to take the title.

With a 65 on Sunday, Rai made history, accomplishing something that golfers such as Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy have never done, per the PGA Tour.

Rai became the first PGA Championship winner to improve his score in every round, and just the eighth golfer to do so at any major. Rai shot a 70 on round 1, sitting three strokes back of the leaders and tied for 33rd. He would improve to shoot a 69 in Round 2 before a 67 in Round 3. Rai then had the second-best round of the day on Sunday, shooting a 65 to take the victory.

The last time a golfer improved round by round to win a major was Mark O’Meara at the 1998 Masters, who shot a 67 in Round 4 to win the tournament. Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Ben Hogan (twice), James Braid, and Jack White are the other golfers to improve round over round to win a major.

Making it more impressive was the first round score of Rai. He shot the lowest score in the first round of the eight golfers to still improve round over round. The previous best first round was Ben Hogan at the 1953 Open Championship, when he shot a 73 in the first round. Meanwhile, it was tied for the best final round of the eight golfers to achieve the feat. He tied with Jack Nicklaus, who shot a 65 in the 1986 Masters.

Rai will now look towards the U.S. Open in June, where his best finish is a tie for 19th.
