$6.2bn NFL franchise officially agrees to buy land for new headquarters in different state
The Kansas City Chiefs have finally secured the land they need to build their new headquarters and practice facility.
The Chiefs bought up the land ahead of the deadline and it marks a major step in their move to Olathe.

Kansas Legislative Coordinating Council gave both the Chiefs and MLB‘s Kansas City Royals a June 2026 deadline to take advantage of a stadium financing plan.
KCTV 5 reports that they have also purchased a ‘majority’ of the land for their $3bn stadium in Wyandotte County, but there is still work to do.
The Chiefs are targeting a 2031 completion for both their state-of-the-art domed stadium and the headquarters.
“We currently have all land under control for the practice facility in Olathe and have a majority of land under control for the stadium in Wyandotte County,” the Chiefs said, via KCTV 5.
“We feel very good about the position we’re in and continue the process to finalize a few additional pieces.
“The state has been a great partner, and we have no intention of suspending exclusivity.
“We remain in contact with them, are keeping them updated on our progress, and look forward to working with them as we move to the definitive documentation stage.”
The headquarters and training facility will be built upon a 165-acre site at College Boulevard and Ridgeview Road in Olathe.
If the Chiefs had missed the deadline, they would have had limited support from the state.
The aforementioned stadium financing plan, more commonly known as STAR Bonds, which will make up for 60 percent of the costs.

The STAR bonds have two main components, firstly allowing the state to designate a portion of sales tax revenues from Missouri that have been generated by this project in neighbouring communities to fund this project.
Secondly, it allows Wyandotte County and the City of Olathe to designate a portion of their local sales tax revenue generated by this project to pay for it.
The Hunt Family, who own the Chiefs, are also committing to $1 billion in additional development, a portion of which can also be incentivised by STAR bonds.
The Chiefs current lease deal at Arrowhead Stadium expires in 2030, all being well, it should be a smooth transition from the franchise.
Arrowhead has been the home of the Chiefs since 1972, and their stadium has had a makeover ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The venue will be known as Kansas City Stadium due to FIFA’s strict regulations on non-exclusive commercial rights. It will host six games in the Group Stage.

In order to be approved as a venue by FIFA ahead of the expanded 48-team tournament, the Chiefs needed to upgrade their playing surface.
They did so by installing an air system underneath the field which has been designed to help with the quality of the grass pitch.
