European heavyweights Red Star Belgrade and Fenerbahce are both in Champions League second qualifying round action on Wednesday night, both having given themselves a first leg lead to as they bid to reach round three of qualifying, the penultimate round before league phase.
The Serbian champions, who are also the former European champions following their glory in 1991, have reached the league phase of the Champions League in two of the last three seasons, and are well placed to reach round three of qualifying this time around.
A 4-0 victory in Northern Ireland last week leaves them heading into their home second leg on Wednesday almost certain of a place in the third round of qualification, while Larne will have to settle for a transfer into the third round of Europa League qualifying.
Fenerbahce have a bit more work to do having edged to a 1-0 win over Gornik Zabrze in the Polish side’s first match in Europe’s premier club competition since 1988.
Elsewhere in Poland, reigning champions Lech Poznan are also pretty much through to round three following their 4-1 win in Denmark against Aarhus last week, while Slovakian champions Slovan Bratislava, who reached the league phase two years ago, will head into Wednesday’s home leg content with their 2-0 win over Iberia 1999 in Georgia.
A few teams with work to do include Lithuanian champions Kauno Zalgiris, who returned from the Faroe Islands with a goalless draw last time out, while Universitatea Craiova of Romania and Hapoel Be’er Sheva of Israel both have deficits to overturn.
The Romanians were defeated 1-0 in Bulgaria by Levski Sofia last week, while the Israeli champions lost in Iceland 2-1, but both are expected to still progress through to the third round of qualifying with victories in Wednesday night’s second legs.
