‘You’re wrong’ – Thomas Frank handed stern riposte after ‘risky’ Tottenham fan comments

Thomas Frank has been told he’s WRONG to call out Tottenham fans for booing Guglielmo Vicario after his mistake in the 2-1 defeat to Fulham.

Supporters unleashed a volley of fury on two occasions after the Italian shot-stopper failed to clear his lines while out of his area, allowing Harry Wilson to score the Cottagers’ second into an open goal.

The 29-year-old – a member of the club’s leadership team – then appeared bellow blame towards a teammate, further irking those in the stands.

The N17 faithful booed his first two touches after the goal before letting out an ironic cheer when he later cleared the ball into touch in similar scenario.

Manager Thomas Frank has now overseen seven defeats in 21 games, with just one home win in the Premier League all season.

Meanwhile, across the calendar year, fans – with some of the most expensive season ticket prices in Europe – have seen just three home wins in the English top flight.

But, while at attempting to support his under-fire goalkeeper, the Dane labelled those who booed ‘not true fans’.

Frank said: “When you’re down 2-0 after six minutes, there is a mountain to climb. When you’re in a bad spell, everything seems to go against you as well – the first was a deflected shot, the second is a mistake from Vic.

“I didn’t like that our fans booed at him straight after and a few times after that. They can’t be true Tottenham fans because everyone supports each other when you’re on the pitch and we do everything we can to perform. I’m fine with them booing after the match, no problem, but not during. That is unacceptable in my opinion.”

And former Premier League striker Tony Cascarino has insisted Frank has made a mistake by calling out the fans.

“It’s wrong. Thomas is wrong,” he told the Weekend Sports Breakfast.

“I’ve got a lot of admiration for Thomas Frank and what he did at Brentford. But you’re wrong.

Vicario has had a season of highs and lows with mistakes coming swiftly after good displays

“You can’t say they’re not true Tottenham fans if they boo. They are true Tottenham fans. They’re making themselves heard.”

He then added that the manager and the players need to take accountability instead of comment on the reaction from the stands.

He continued: “They’re unhappy of what they’ve witnessed. And they’ve been unhappy certainly in the last few weeks at the Tottenham Stadium. They have every right.

“Look booing is not nice. You can be a player that’s got family or friends in the stands.

“I had it in my career. I had bad periods where you got booed. You just have to take it and you know what you can win them over.

“But when you make such an error like the keeper did. And they’re booing him because they’re furious with him because they’re thinking, ‘We’ve just been beaten by our arch rivals in the north London derby. Then we’ve been conceded five in Paris. And then, funny enough, after six minutes we’re 2-0 down’. And the second one, mate, is on you.

Asked if the fans are now turning on Frank, he added: “They’re unhappy. They’ve been unhappy from last season. There’s things that have gone on. Their results have been pretty terrible at home.

“Ange Postecoglou last year, it was a disastrous season. You know and it’s going that way again. I mean because they’ve done okay. You know up until the last week, it has been a terrible week for Tottenham Hotspur.

“You know like Arsenal then PSG and then this game another London derby. It’s been a terrible week. What do you want [the fans] to do? Clap them, applaud them? They’re not going to do that.”

Pressed further on Frank’s comment those who booed are not ‘true fans’, the ex-Chelsea star added: “No you can’t say that. You cannot say that.

“I said to you yesterday, we had a conversation about fans abroad and some of the demands on them. We have fans that are very considerate.

If it’s booing, it’s as bad as it gets, which it is. That’s the worst thing that fans do.

“You go abroad and I’m not condoning any of this. But it’s far worse in many different countries.”

Henry Winter’s Verdict

Speaking to Shaun Custis, Winter said: “When Thomas Frank said that they can’t be true Tottenham fans you just bore that look of someone who’s spent a long time covering football and can’t believe a manager who’s a very intelligent manager and a good manager. a fantastic manager.

“It’s risky. A bit naive.

“I mean what you do in situations like that, you play the Alex Ferguson card. You come out and you defend your man but you don’t almost pick fights, if that’s maybe too strong a word, with Tottenham fans.

“You know it’s a great stadium to go to but it’s probably not the cheapest in terms of season tickets and remember those fans will be there after Thomas Frank has left after Vicario has moved on to another club. They will be there. They are true fans. You can’t throw that.

“Also it’s Tottenham it’s not Brentford and the scrutiny is going to be more. whether that’s on social media whether that’s us lot on the radio whether that’s on television whether that’s on the back pages there’s bound to be more scrutiny on it. I mean that you know a tiny sound becomes a big noise at clubs like Spurs.”
