Giovanni Reyna caps off incredible USMNT effort vs. Paraguay with goal in World Cup opener

Giovanni Reyna helped the USMNT end their World Cup opener with a bang by scoring an incredible goal in their 4-1 victory Paraguay on Friday night.

Reyna is going through the second World Cup of his career with the U.S. He played sparingly in 2022, mainly taking part in the Round of 16 loss to the Netherlands.

Reyna has embraced a new role with the current squad that head coach Mauricio Pochettino now leads. This means that the midfielder will have an impact on the offensive side of the ball as long as the Americans hold the advantage over their opponent.

That was especially the case in their tournament opener against Paraguay. They boasted a 3-0 lead upon Reyna’s entry to the pitch, giving him a chance to shine throughout the remainder of the second half.

Reyna made sure to impress the U.S. faithful with an incredible highlight. In the final seconds of the match, he fired an incredible trivela shot into the back of the net to cap off the night with a bang.

How Giovanni Reyna, USMNT played against Paraguay

Giovanni Reyna finally obtained the first World Cup goal of his career, helping the USMNT start the tournament on fire after beating Paraguay.

The U.S. enjoyed great performances from Christian Pulisic and Folarin Balogun. Pulisic created the first two goals as the opening score forced an own goal from Paraguay, while the second saw Pulisic deliver an excellent assist to Balogun. The latter eventually ended the first half with a great shot to the top left corner of the net.

Even though Paraguay finally got on the board in the second half, they didn’t have enough gas to keep up. The U.S. outmatched them on both sides of the ball, something that Reyna demonstrated with his remarkable goal to end the match.

Following this match, the USMNT prepares for Matchday 2 of the tournament. Their next opponent is Australia as that game takes place on June 19 at 3 p.m. ET.
