Listen to Andrés Cantor’s absolutely incredible Folarin Balogun World Cup goal call
The United States Men’s National Team couldn’t have dreamed up a better start to its home World Cup. The Americans absolutely dismantled Paraguay 4-1 at Los Angeles Stadium on Friday night, putting on a clinic in their Group D opener. While the entire squad looked revitalized under new manager Mauricio Pochettino, forward Folarin Balogun completely stole the show with a historic multi-goal performance.
The U.S. got on the board early via an own goal from Paraguayan midfielder Damián Bobadilla in the sixth minute, but it was Balogun who blew the game wide open. In the 30th minute, the star striker scored his first goal past goalkeeper Orlando Gill to double the lead. Then came the true magic just before the whistle. Four minutes into first-half stoppage time, midfielder Malik Tillman sliced open the defense with a perfect ball to Balogun, who fractured the backline and buried a clinical strike into the top left corner.
The historic 3-0 halftime lead, the largest advantage the U.S. has ever held in a World Cup match, left legendary Telemundo commentator Andrés Cantor completely losing his mind. As the ball hit the net, Cantor dropped his signature, epic roar, shouting “¡GOOOOOOOOOOL!” to millions watching at home.

Paraguay managed a consolation goal from Maurício in the 72nd minute, but the Americans slammed the door shut when substitute Giovanni Reyna hammered home a final exclamation point in the 97th minute.
Balogun’s brace makes him the first American with a multi-goal game in his World Cup debut. The USMNT only scored three goals total during the entire 2022 tournament in Qatar, meaning this offensive explosion signals a brand new era. With three points secured and a massive wave of momentum, the U.S. shifts its focus to a June 19 clash against Australia in Seattle.
