Yankees suddenly facing big Anthony Volpe decision

After a disappointing end to their 2025 season, the New York Yankees are off to an incredible start, holding the best record in the American League despite having multiple players still working back from injuries.

One such player is Anthony Volpe, the team’s longtime shortstop who won a Golden Glove as a rookie in 2023.

Discussing Volpe’s timeline amid Jose Caballero’s hot start to the 2026 season, MLB Network’s Ken Rosenthal broke down the two paths the Yankees could take with the 25-year-old and why this problem might actually be a good one to have.

“Volpe’s rehabilitation assignment expires tomorrow. So at that point, the Yankees either bring him to the majors or they keep him in the minors. And as you mentioned, the Yankees are winning today. They’ve got the best record by far in the American League. It’ll be 22-11 if they hold on against the Orioles. And Jose Caballero, their shortstop, is playing well on both sides of the ball,” Rosenthal said.

“His defensive metrics are excellent. Offensively, the last 15 games or so, he has been outstanding. So if you’re the Yankees, why disrupt a good thing? You can keep Anthony Volpe in the minors, say, hey, we want you to get a full spring training coming off that shoulder surgery. And if Caballero cools down, then maybe at some point later you have a decision.”

After turning in a disappointing season in 2025 versus his past benchmarks, Volpe’s absence has opened the door for Caballero to showcase what he can do in the short term. If he keeps playing well, the Yankees can ride the hot hand while Volpe gets back on track. And when Caballero cools off, or another injury forces him to another position, Volpe will be waiting in the wings to take over, giving New York optionality at a key position.
