Yankees add pitching depth in trade with Rockies
The New York Yankees are currently in the midst of a highly consequential offseason for the future direction of the franchise. The team recently made headlines by re-signing star Cody Bellinger to a lucrative contract that will keep him with the franchise over the long haul, on the heels of their playoff exit to the eventual AL champion Toronto Blue Jays.
Now, the team is busy working on adding to its pitching department, and they continued those efforts with a move on Wednesday.
“The Yankees acquired RHP Angel Chivilli from the Rockies for infielder T.J. Rumfield, the team announced,” reported ClutchPoints’ Joey Mistretta on X, formerly Twitter.
The Yankees also announced an additional move in order to clear the way for the transaction.
“To make room on the 40-man roster, the Yankees have designated OF Michael Siani for assignment,” reported the team’s PR department on X.
Chivilli made his MLB debut in the 2024 season with the Rockies, earning the first save of his MLB career on August 20 of that year.
In 2025, the 23 year-old appeared in 43 games for Colorado and had a 1–5 record, 7.06 ERA, and 43 strikeouts over 58+2⁄3 innings pitched.”
Meanwhile, Rumfield has yet to make his MLB debut after being drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 12th round of the 2021 MLB Draft.
Overall, while Chivilli’s numbers for the Rockies a year ago may not be the most encouraging, his youth will certainly help out in the Yankees’ pitching department, and he theoretically has plenty of room to grow.
As previously mentioned, the Yankees are looking to bounce back after a tough playoff loss in the ALDS against the Blue Jays in 2025, a series in which Aaron Judge finally shook off some of his infamous playoff demons, but didn’t get much help at all from his teammates.
In any case, spring training for the Yankees is slated to get underway next month. Their 2026 season will kick off late in March with a series on the road against the San Francisco Giants.
