Canadiens’ Lane Hutson crushes Chris Chelios playoff benchmark vs. Lightning

The Montreal Canadiens defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning on Wednesday to take a 3-2 series lead. Montreal and Tampa played another close game, but the Habs got it done in Game 5. One reason the Canadiens have had this success in this series is defenseman Lane Hutson.

Hutson was a star for Montreal in the regular season, scoring 78 points. In the postseason, he has continued to shine with two goals and five points. He has skated in 10 career playoff games, and now has 10 career playoff points.

This is a notable feat in Canadiens history, as well. Hutson is now the fastest Montreal defenseman to 10 playoff points in their history, according to NHL Public Relations. He surpassed former Canadiens captain Chris Chelios, who needed 13 games to record 10 career playoff points.

Additionally, Hutson joined an exclusive club in Montreal history. He joined Larry Robinson and Serge Savard as the only defenseman in Habs history to record five points in his team’s first five playoff games in a series.

The Canadiens began the night with Brendan Gallagher scoring three minutes in the game. Tampa tied the game in the second before regaining the lead. However, they couldn’t maintain the lead through the end of the period. Alexandre Texier scored in the third to give Montreal the lead for good.

The Canadiens have not won the Stanley Cup since 1993. They are one step closer toward achieving the ultimate goal, they need one more win to advance. Game 6 takes place at the Bell Centre in Montreal on Friday night.
