Wyndham Clark reveals odd coat hanger drill at range on Monday ahead of Open Championship
Wyndham Clark is looking to become a three-time major champion. Clark is coming off a win at the 2026 US Open and now looks to win The Open Championship this week.
On Monday, Clark hit the range to prepare for the week and was using a coat hanger to help him out. Clark then explained why he was using a coat hanger as a training aid, per Brentley Romine of the Golf Channel.
“Mondays are my technical days. You won’t see me doing a bunch of that stuff the rest of the week. My swing’s gotten a little off. I kind of hit it kind of crappy, especially on Sunday — or just yesterday. Yeah, the coat hanger is for wrist angle, trying to get a little more inflection in my left wrist so I can square the face more. That’s just what it is,” Clark said.
This will be the fifth time that Clark is playing at The Open Championship. In 2022, he finished tied for 76th. Following his US Open win in 2023, he finished tied for 33rd. Clark then missed the cut in 2024, but had his best finish at the Open Championship in 2025, when he was tied for fourth.
Clark uses the wooden coat hanger at the advice of his instructor, Pat Coyner. He places the coat hanger against his club grip with the hook parallel to the club face. He will take between 15 and 20 shots with the coat hanger before putting it back on the rack.
The Open Championship at Royal Birkdale begins on Thursday. Clark has one of the later tee times on Thursday, teeing off at 10:04 am ET along side Cameron Young and Ludvig Aberg. He will then tee off at 4:58 am ET on Friday for round two.
