Wrexham ‘set to rip up player’s contract’ after playing just six games for club

Conor Coady is reportedly set to leave Wrexham and become a free agent before the transfer window closes.

The ex-England international joined the Welsh outfit from Leicester last summer in a £2m deal, penning a two-year contract.

But Coady has struggled for game time since then, making just six appearances in all competitions for the club.

He spent the second half of the season on loan at Charlton and featured 12 times as the Addicks secured Championship safety.

The centre-back has since returned to Wrexham for the new season, but is yet to feature at all.

Coady hasn’t been included in the matchday squad for all four of the Hollywood-owned outfit’s games so far this term.

And it now appears his time in north Wales could be coming to a premature end.

End of the road?

The Mail’s Simon Jones reports that Coady is set to leave Wrexham via mutual consent before Tuesday’s transfer deadline.

It is not yet clear where the former Wolves captain could go next, although rivals Swansea have been credited with an interest.

An early departure from the Racecourse Ground is a far from ideal scenario from Coady, who admitted earlier this summer he hadn’t given up hope of a revival at Wrexham.

Having joined the Red Dragons ahead of their return to the Championship following a third consecutive promotion, he moved to Phil Parkinson‘s side with the Premier League in his sights.

Speaking in May, Coady said: “When I went there last summer, it was something I really wanted to be a part of and sometimes I think people look at footballers and think something’s happened.

“Nothing’s ever personal in football. Sometimes a manager just doesn’t take to you and I think that was what it was.

“[But] I’ve got a really good relationship with Phil Parkinson – nothing’s ever happened between us.

“I had a great relationship when I was there and they were brilliant with me in January when it came to maybe wanting to leave if there was an opportunity.

“Wrexham is a brilliant, brilliant club so I can’t sit here now and rule anything out because I don’t know what’s going to happen.”

Should Coady end up a free agent, there will no doubt be plenty of clubs keen to take on a player with his wealth of experience.

The 33-year-old has made 198 Premier League appearances and captained Wolves in the top flight.

He skippered the West Midlands side to promotion from the Championship in 2018 and held onto the armband.

Coady also has almost 200 Championship appearances to his name, having joined Huddersfield on a permanent deal in 2014 after starting his senior career at Liverpool.

He then made the switch to Wolves, where he went on to play over 300 games for the club across an eight-year spell, earning 10 senior England caps during this time too.

His time at the club came to an end in 2023, as he fell out of favour and secured a loan switch to Everton.

Coady then left permanently a year later to join Leicester, where he helped the Foxes win the Championship title.

But following their immediate relegation from the Premier League in 2025 he made the move to Wrexham.
