The race for the Golden Boot at this summer’s World Cup will be as intriguing as ever as the top forwards around the planet look to etch their name into history.
Kylian Mbappe will be taking part in his third World Cup at the ripe age of 27, and makes the trip to North America this summer having bagged 48 goals in 52 matches for club and country since August last year.
The France captain has already won the World Cup in his short career, lifting the trophy as a 19-year-old in Russia in 2018, and won the award of the Golden Boot four years ago in Qatar, becoming the second person in history to score a hat trick in the final before eventually losing to Argentina on penalties.
The Real Madrid forward will also be looking at Miroslav Klose’s record of 16 World Cup goals throughout his career, the Frenchman currently on 12 goals from his 14 matches across two previous tournaments, putting him very much within reach of that record this summer.
England captain Harry Kane is the second favourite to win what would also be his second Golden Boot at World Cup this summer, having achieved the feat previously in 2018 in Russia, scoring six goals in the Three Lions’ run to the semi finals for the first time since 1990.
Despite turning 33 next month, the Bayern Munich striker makes the trip to North America on the back of the best season of his career, scoring 67 goals in 57 games for club and country throughout the campaign, helping his club to the domestic treble this season.
England’s all time top goal scorer is also only two goals away from equalling Gary Lineker’s record for England’s all time World Cup scorer, the only notable record left for the Tottenham striker to break.
There’s a bit of a jump in odds between the front two and the rest of the chasing pack, with Norway’s Erling Haaland and Spain’s Mikel Oyarazabal each priced at 12/1.
Haaland will be competing in his first ever major international tournament this summer after Norway qualified for the World Cup for the first time since 1998.
The Manchester City serial winner has scored 51 goals for club and country across the season, and has an international record of 55 goals in 50 senior appearances for his country.
Oyarzabal scored the winning goal in the Euro 2024 final against England in Berlin two summers ago, and has since established himself as Spain’s first choice striker, scoring nine goals in eight matches for his nation this season.
The Real Sociedad captain will be taking part in his first World Cup having missed the last one through injury, but has scored in three finals for Spain, two in Nations League and one in the Euros, becoming a crucial player for the Spanish team.
