Wizards win NBA Draft Lottery, No. 1 overall pick in loaded class

After one of the most highly-anticipated NBA Draft lotteries in recent memory, it’s a great day to be a Washington Wizards fan.

The Wizards had the ping-pong balls bounce their way and have earned the No. 1 overall pick in a generational 2026 NBA Draft class. The Utah Jazz, Memphis Grizzlies, Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Clippers round out the rest of the top five.

Washington will have its pick among four elite prospects: BYU forward AJ Dybantsa, Kansas guard Darryn Peterson, Duke forward Cameron Boozer and North Carolina forward Caleb Wilson. Dybantsa is ranked No. 1 on Brett Siegel’s CutchPoints NBA Draft Big Board, but any of the four would be a defensible selection.

This is the first time the Wizards have had the No. 1 overall pick since 2010, when they selected John Wall.

Dybantsa is a two-way wing who led all of college basketball in scoring as a freshman. He has the tools to be elite on both ends of the floor and will be a dynamic scorer and playmaker from the second he steps into the league.

There are more questions surrounding Peterson, who dealt with constant cramping issues during his freshman season at Kansas. However, if he can get his health figured out, he is one of the best offensive guard prospects in years.

Wilson and Boozer are both power forwards who play both ends of the floor and can score the ball at will, but they do it in different ways. Wilson can step out and shoot it while using his athleticism to finish at the rim, while Boozer is a technician in the post.

The Wizards made a number of big moves last season, trading for both Trae Young from the Atlanta Hawks and Anthony Davis from the Dallas Mavericks. The Wizards also have a number of intriguing young pieces, including last year’s No. 6 overall pick Tre Johnson, so adding Dybantsa or Peterson to that mix makes this a very interesting team to watch in the Eastern Conference in the coming years.
