Wings’ Azzi Fudd takes subtle jab at referees after first preseason

All eyes will be on Azzi Fudd when the Dallas Wings take on the Indiana Fever at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Saturday to open their season. Many are curious about how the top overall pick will fare in her highly anticipated debut.

Transitioning from college to the WNBA is not a walk in the park, and Fudd is still adjusting to the nuances, particularly the officiating.

The Wings swept their two-game schedule in the preseason after beating the Las Vegas Aces, 101-84, at Moody Center on Sunday. After the game, Fudd issued a blunt response when asked about adjusting to the physicality in the WNBA.

“Honestly, I feel more confused. I thought you could be physical in the W, and anytime you touch someone, it’s a foul,” said Fudd in the video posted by DCTF’s Melissa Triebwasser.

“I don’t know. I’m still figuring that out.”

Well, that will surely endear Fudd to the league.

Even though they won, the 23-year-old guard was still frustrated, and Aziaha James had to playfully console her.

Fudd was whistled for five fouls in their two games in the preseason. Against the Aces, she scored 12 points on 4-of-10 shooting in 21 minutes. She had four points on 2-of-7 shooting in 16 minutes in their win over the Fever, 95-80, at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Thursday.

The expectations are high for Fudd, who won a national title at Connecticut in 2025 and was named the MOP of the NCAA Women’s Tournament.

James also jokingly said Fudd will be learning about fines after her sharp remark. But the league might give the newcomer a pass for this one.
