Why there are no Premier League games this Sunday with Matchweek 34 paused

The Premier League schedule has had a shake-up this weekend, with no games taking place on Sunday afternoon.

Typically, there will often be at least two matches planned, as football fans usually settle down for some top-flight action.

But this weekend is an anomaly, at least when it comes to the Premier League, as there aren’t any fixtures scheduled on Sunday.

And here’s a look at why a strange change has been made…

Why are there no Premier League games this Sunday?

There has been a switch to the usual Premier League schedule this Sunday due to the FA Cup semi-finals.

Originally, Burnley vs Manchester City and Brighton vs Chelsea were planned to take place, live on Sky Sports.

Man City announced on March 4: “Our visit to take on Burnley switches to Sunday 26 April, with the Turf Moor encounter kicking off at 14:00 (UK) again for Sky Sports.”

Chelsea confirmed on the same day: “Our trip to Brighton has been pushed back a day to Sunday 26 April, although that is subject to change should we progress to the semi-finals of the FA Cup.”

And that caveat has led to both teams’ fixtures being changed.

Man City and Chelsea both reached the FA Cup semi-finals, with City thrashing Liverpool and the Blues battering Port Vale.

The semi-finals were then scheduled for Saturday, April 25 and Sunday, April 26, meaning their league fixtures were moved forward.

And therefore, it meant the Premier League’s two planned Sunday games were moved and not replaced, with the rest of the matches taking place on Friday, Saturday and Monday.

Busy weekend of football on talkSPORT

So, it’s the FA Cup that has enforced the Premier League schedule switch, but having both competitions means more football.

And four teams have the chance to book their spot in the final.

Man City take on Southampton on Saturday evening at Wembley, with the Championship side looking to pull off an upset.

Then, on Sunday, Chelsea take on Leeds back at Wembley.

Both games will be live on talkSPORT, with full commentary of the semi-finals across the weekend coming from Jim Proudfoot, Alan Pardew, Sam Matterface and Steve Bruce.

On top of that, the Premier League will be continuing alongside the FA Cup, with games coming on Friday, Saturday and Monday.
