Why the Seattle Seahawks are wearing a special patch on their Super Bowl LX uniforms

What a way to celebrate a landmark year in franchise history.

When NFL fans tune into Super Bowl LX between the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots, all eyes will be focusing on who comes out on top.

But, some eagle-eyed viewers will notice a patch on Seattle’s jersey that holds a lot of sentimental value for the franchise.

The patch, on the left-hand side of the jersey, has been there all season, marking the 50th anniversary of the franchise.

A ’50’ features a blend of the current era’s College Blue with the original Royal Blue, while ‘EST 1976’ sits atop the patch as a reminder of when the franchise originated.

There are also 12 feathers at the bottom of the patch to honor Seattle’s home crowd – commonly known as the 12th man.

It’s hard to imagine a more thrilling 50th anniversary season than what the Seahawks have done in 2025.

Head coach Mike MacDonald’s Seahawks finished the season 14-3, top of the NFC West.

They blew away the San Francisco 49ers in the divisional round, and then defeated the Los Angeles Rams to make it to the Super Bowl for the first time since 2015.

There have been several keys behind this success, both MacDonald and defensive coordinator Aden Durde helped the Hawks enter the postseason ranked sixth in total defense, allowing 285.6 yards per game, compared to 14th the previous season.

Durde also became the first British-born coordinator to make the Super Bowl.

Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Kenneth Walker III have history in sights

Third-year wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba set single-season franchise records for receiving yards and receptions, and will have his eyes set on the all-time Super Bowl receiving record.

The mark, held by the legendary Jerry Rice, stands at an incredible 215 yards, and Smith-Njigba’s season high is 167 against the Tennessee Titans.

Running back Kenneth Walker III will be looking to make Super Bowl history with the most rushing yards in the game.

The record, set in 1988 by Washington’s Tommy Smith, is 204 yards. Walker’s season high was 105 yards against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

New England Patriots out to rain on parade

All that stands in their way from the Vince Lombardi trophy is the Patriots, who themselves have been transformed by Mike Vrabel.

The Patriots also finished 14-3, defeating the Los Angeles Chargers, Houston Texans and Denver Broncos on their way to their first Super Bowl appearance since 2018.

New England will be led by second-year QB Drake Maye, who threw for 4384 yards and 31 touchdowns.

Seattle will be looking to cap-off their 50th anniversary season with a Super Bowl title, in what will be a tantalizing matchup between two 14-win teams.
